This existing one story house in the hills suffers for lack of character but is completely transformed while only marginally expanded. The northeast facade is reordered with the addition of a freestanding wall which gives privacy from the street while directing guests to the front entry and framing a small garage court. On the opposite side facing out over the hills, a porch and two semi circular extensions expand the house into the garden towards the views. These additional, freestanding walls, roofs and overhangs control light and shade the primarily glass walls from the southwestern sun.
A fireplace divides the main room into living and dining spaces. The circular room off the expanded kitchen provides a breakfast area with all of the best views. A similar form expands the main bedroom to the same advantage. Interior rearrangements provide a spacious main bedroom with a generous bathroom, a game room and a guest room.
